A little about Windows Live Hotmail … and more!

Windows Live Hotmail, formerly known as MSN Hotmail is a free web-based email service operated by Microsoft as part of its Windows Live group.
Hotmail uses powerful Microsoft technology helps fight spam and improve security. You can get all your e-mail accounts, calendars, and contacts in one place – even if you use other e-mail services. You can also chat from your inbox, see what’s new with friends, and get 5 GB storage that grows when you need it.
Hotmail and Microsoft’s other Windows Live services are hosted in multiple datacenters around the world. The Hotmail service is organized in logical “scale units,” or clusters.
Hosting mail and data on servers is a big responsibility and Microsoft takes quality, performance, and reliability very seriously. Microsoft has made significant investments in engineering and infrastructure to help keep Hotmail up and running 24 hours a day, day in and day out, year after year.
Hotmail is a gigantic service in all dimensions. Here are some of the highlights:
– It is a worldwide service, delivering localized versions of Hotmail to 59 regional markets, in 36 languages.
– It hosts well over 1.3 billion inboxes (some users have multiple inboxes)
– Over 350 million people are actively using Hotmail on a monthly basis.
– Hotmail handle over 3 billion messages a day and filter out over 1 billion spam messages – mail that you never see in your inbox.
– It is growing storage at over 2 petabytes a month (a petabyte is ~1 million gigabytes or ~1000 terabytes). Hotmail currently have over 155 petabytes of storage deployed (70% of storage is taken up with attachments, typically photos).
– Hotmail is the largest SQL Server 2008 deployment in the world (we monitor and manage many thousands of SQL servers).
You can imagine that the Hotmail user interface you see in the browser is only the tip of the iceberg!

Microsoft reveals 2 million users of iOS 5 Hotmail, growing 100K each day

Hotmail usage on iOS 5
Microsoft revealed on Wednesday that over 2 million Hotmail customers have enabled their account using Apple’s new iOS 5 add account feature.
Microsoft’s Windows Live chief, Chris Jones, revealed the statistics in a blog post on Wednesday. Microsoft added support for Exchange Active Sync on Hotmail last year and mobile devices have been taking advantage of the feature ever since. Apple never shipped an “add account” step for Hotmail on its original iOS software. iOS 5 introduced Hotmail into the default mail settings and over 2 million people have connected Hotmail to their iPhone and iPad devices. “Almost 100,000 new iOS 5 devices are being set up with Hotmail every day,” revealed Jones.
The timing of Microsoft’s stats comes just hours after Google released a Gmail application for iOS 5. Google was forced to pull the application following a major notifications bug. “The iOS app we launched today contained a bug with notifications,” said a Google spokesperson. “We have pulled the app to fix the problem. Sorry we messed up.” Microsoft seized the opportunity to remind people of Hotmail and Jones was quick to note that Hotmail on smartphones works across Windows Phone, Nokia, Android and BlackBerry devices. “So, whatever phone you have, it’s a great time to switch to Hotmail,” he added.

How to chat with people with Hotmail account

Hotmail is a common free email service used by people across the world. This email service is part of the MSN family that is now linked with Windows Live. Gmail and Yahoo email providers have chat services within their email servers, but those who wish to chat with Hotmail email addresses must use Windows Live messenger (which was once MSN messenger).

  • Download the latest version of Windows Live. Save the file to your desktop and run the installation wizard. Restart your computer when this process is completed.
  • Log into Windows Live using your Hotmail email address and password.
  • Use the wizard that will pop up the first time you log in to find all the friends on your contacts list who use Windows Live. You can manually add users by clicking “Contacts” on the top menu bar. Select “Add a Contact” and type the person’s email into the bar. Submit the information. If the person does not use MSN messenger it will send an invitation to start using the instant messenger.
